Geo-politics and Hong Kong: how will it cope?

Date:     Wednesday 10th June 2015
Venue:  Mayer Brown International LLP, 201 Bishopsgate, London, EC2M 3AF
Time:    Seminar 6.30pm to 7.45pm. Reception 7.45pm to 8.15pm
Cost:     Free to members of the Hong Kong Association, £12 non members (admin fee)

Keynote Speaker: Mr John Greenwood, Chief Economist, Invesco Perpetual Fund Management
Chairman: Mr James Hughes-Hallet, Director, John Swire & Sons Ltd
Panel Speakers:
Dr Gerard Lyons, Chief Economic Advisor to the Mayor of London
Mr Gareth Ward, Head of China Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office

This forum, which is being very kindly hosted by Corporate Supporter, Mayer Brown, will look at the geo-political uncertainties faced by Hong Kong as a global financial centre. Those present are likely to be well aware of the many current wars, insurrections, tensions and confrontations facing the world but the knock on effects for such a key financial and commercial centre do merit discussion and examination.

John Greenwood will provide an assessment of the effects on Hong Kong of fluctuations and convulsions in world trade and commodity prices and at the uncertainties facing the banking industry and financial services. The panel will discuss these and share with the audience its experience and conclusions. The seminar will be chaired by James Hughes Hallett, who was Chairman of John Swire and Sons until December 2014. He has a long and distinguished experience of Hong Kong business.

John Greenwood was an economic advisor to the Hong Kong Government in the nineties and remains a
member of the Currency Board Committee of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. Gerard Lyons is an expert on Asia and is author of the “Consolation of Economics” which has just been released in paperback by Faber & Faber. He is a regular broadcaster and respected speaker at major domestic and world financial conferences. Among Gareth Ward’s postings in the Foreign Office have been Moscow, St Petersburg and Beijing. He has been Head of The China Department at the Foreign and Commonwealth office since 2013.
This should be an extremely relevant and timely session. Thanks to the generosity of Mayer Brown, there will be no cost to members of the Association. Non members will be asked to pay a £12 administrative fee.
