charles-haddon-caveChristmas is the traditional time of year to show love to friends and family. This year in recognition of the difficult time our beloved Hong Kong is going through we will dedicate our Annual Hong Kong Society Dinner to our Hong Kong family in the spirit of Christmas.

We are delighted that The Rt Hon. Sir Charles Haddon-Cave Q.C. has accepted our invitation to be the Guest Speaker at the dinner. Raised in Hong Kong (his father, Sir Charles Philip Haddon-Cave was Financial Secretary of Hong Kong from 1971 to 1981 and Chief Secretary from 1981 to 1985), Charles will be ‘in conversation’ with Hong Kong Society Chairman, Nigel Johnson-Hill, on the delights of growing up in such a vibrant culture.

Sir Charles has an exceptional understanding of Hong Kong’s history and legal structure.  He was called to both the Hong Kong and English Bar in 1980 and practised in both places.  In a fascinating legal career, Sir Charles was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1999, Chair of the Advocacy Training Council 2004-2008, conducted the Nimrod Review 2008-2009, appointed a High Court Judge and knighted by the Queen in 2011, Chair of the Judicial College International 2012-2014, Presiding Judge of the Midland Circuit 2014-2017,  Judge-in-charge of the Terrorist List 2017-2018, and is now a Lord Justice of Appeal and a Privy Councillor.  He is also Chair of the Trustees of The Grange Festival in Hampshire.

As in previous years, the Society will be showcasing a Hong Kong talent and we are very pleased that flautist Karen Ka Wing Wong will be performing for us. Karen is pursuing her Masters in Orchestral Artistry (Flute) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, the programme of which is associated with the London Symphony Orchestra. A student of the flute, piccolo and Baroque Flute, Karen was awarded first-class honour for her Bachelor of Arts in Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She performed in the Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York (2017), the Kammermusiksaal, Berliner Philharmonie in Berlin (2017) and the Elgar Room, Royal Albert Hall in London (2019) after clinching first prize in the Golden Classical Music Awards, the Rising Stars Grand Prix and the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition. Karen has performed in masterclasses with many notable musicians globally.
