The Hong Kong Dinner 2011

The aim of the evening was to celebrate in style the relationship between Hong Kong and the UK and members of the HK Society and their guests, succeeded in doing that on 10th June 2011. The dinner was held at the grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company in the City of London.

A Reception, under what was a cloudless early evening sky, preceded Beating Retreat by The Band of The Brigade of Gurkhas. As members sat down for a superb dinner, the sound of heavy rain on the marquee made everyone feel warm and secure. A highlight of the evening was the speech by Professor K.C. Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and The Treasury in Hong Kong; this was followed by a raffle for 12 extremely attractive prizes, the first being 2 Return Business Class Tickets to Hong Kong together with stays of 3 nights each in two well known hotels. After dinner, members enjoyed the music of the Dixieland Godown Band, tried their luck at a charity casino, relaxed at a Champagne Bar or just talked to friends.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, which gave wonderful support for the evening, provided a Wishing Tree and another major attraction was a mural, orchestrated by member Lorette Roberts, of scenes of Hong Kong, as sketched by some 12 members and enlargened onto one wall of the marquee.

Altogether, it was a great evening which will be long remembered by all concerned. All surplus funds from the dinner have been donated to The Gurkha Welfare Trust. The Society is greatly indebted to the generous sponsors of the dinner and also the donors of the raffle prizes, as listed below: please visit the websites shown and use the facilities of the companies whenever possible.
